Braga Warns Public on Chinese Food with Formalin PDF Print E-mail

DAVAO City Councilor Pilar Braga warned the public in buying Chinese food products with formalin.

Inspectors in China shut down at least 180 food processing industries after they found industrial chemicals such as fomalehyde.

Fomaldehyde commonly know as as formalin used in embalming cadavers, were being used by these Chinese factories to make candy, pickles, crackers and preserve seafood.

"Food is becoming tainted and the closure of these Chinese factories only signals that not all food products coming from China is safe," Braga said in one her privilege speech during the regular session in the council.

Braga said that China has literally spread its wings and captured the open market -- from digital technology to food products and supplements.

"Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against China or the Chinese people. What we should be wary about is the proliferation of unchecked and unmonitored food products coming from China. If unregulated or not stopped, these could be bad for the Pinoy's health," Braga said.

Though not trying to sow panic to the public, Braga said it is incumbent upon the council to warn the people about their health and safety.

Braga also calls on the City Health Office, Bureau of Food and Drugs and the Department of Trade and Industry to disseminate the information for the protection of the general public.
