Councilor Pilar C. Braga, current Chairperson of the City Council’s Committee on Energy, Transportation and Communication will give the inspirational talk to the Mindanao Inventors’ Congress and Consultation on April 24 to 25 at Hotel Elena, Lanang, this city.
Queried on the focus of her talk, Braga said that “without inventors and scientists, we will have no electricity today, no fast moving transports, no conveyances, not even the simple yet very useful fountain pen. Inventions have made life easier and more convenient.” On the other hand, Braga expressed concern that inventors are being driven away because of miniscule support we give them. As things go, Filipino inventions have benefited other countries more than they have benefited the Philippines. According to Braga, although we have RA 7459, the “Inventors and Invention Incentives Act of Philippines” to accelerate the generation, promotion and development of Filipino technological inventive potentials, there are still many measures that need to be put in place before our country reap achievements in terms of technology transfer and use, and global marketability of our inventions. Braga sees the inventors’ two-day congress and consultation as a venue for forging much needed continuing partnerships, linkages and networking among the inventors, the academe and industry. As concluding comments, Braga stressed that all of us in our own way need to constantly highlight on a continuing basis the exemplary performance of Filipino scientist and inventors who have influenced the growth of science and technology in other developed countries so that our brother Filipinos at home may gain hope from them. Braga salutes all the heroic work Filipino inventors are doing – our economy, our industries and our schools need them because they are not only our “silent heroes,” but they are also the role model for our younger generations.
